Since 1984, the nation has recognized National Therapeutic Recreation
Week. Celebrated during the second week of July and annually since
then, this year’s activities take place from July 10-16, 2011.
Recreational therapists all across the country organize different
events for their residents to participate in.
What is a Recreational Therapist?
Recreational therapists assist people with disabilities with day-to-day
tasks. Through their patience and guidance, many men, women, and
children are able to live happier and healthier lives. Custom lapel
pins created specifically for National Therapeutic Recreation Week help
get the message out to the public. People can show their support by
donating money and their time to worthy causes involving the disabled
and elderly.
Ways to Celebrate National Therapeutic Recreation Week
The National Therapeutic Recreation Society offers these suggestions on
their website as ways to celebrate this annual event:
Submit an article or press release on National Therapeutic Recreation
Week to your local newspapers.
Speak at your next city council meeting about the accessibility needs
of your community.
Write letters to and visit local businesses about being accessible to
persons with disabilities.
Feature adapted equipment and explain simple modifications that can
enhance program accessibility.
Develop a raised garden in your facility. Have community members choose
items to grow.
Organize a presentation to co-workers on the benefits of therapeutic
recreation.
Organize an intergenerational program for seniors and children, such as
story time, reading programs to encourage reading or other programs
that might enhance academic performance.
We would like to add custom lapel pins to this list. Hand them out
with a brochure highlighting your program to people in your community
to educate them on the benefits of therapeutic recreation. Despite
their small size, custom pins play a big role in impacting people’s
lives.
