Star Wars lapel pins have remained a favorite of fans ever since the first movie was released in 1977. The small pieces of memorabilia have seen many forms and characters since then. Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Jabba the Hutt, and Yoda have graced the front of posters, t-shirts, books, and lapel pins for decades. Despite being over 30 years old, Star Wars, Return of the Jedi and The Empire of Strikes Back are a popular staple in movie libraries worldwide.
A new trilogy of movies helped create a new generation of fans. That’s when the marketing machine was put into full effect. Episode I: The Phantom Menace brought in $431,088,301 in box office sales in 1999. This led merchandisers to stock up on Stars Wars merchandise once again. Collectible sets of lapel pins featuring Princess Leia, Chewbacca, R2D2, and C-3PO flew off shelves with fervor.
Hungry fans just couldn’t get enough movie memorabilia to satisfy their needs. Fans of the films resorted to forming their own fan clubs and creating their own custom lapel pins. They traveled great distances to conventions just so that they could trade items with other Star Wars enthusiasts.
Much like with baseball, pin trading blew up. Disney Parks released a whole new set of Star Wars Weekends lapel pins in 2010. Each was unique in appearance and something that fans coveted.
